\nit is dark, damp and gold-orange glinting.<\/p>\n
tall streetlights trail long candlelight colored streaks
\nacross the warm, fresh black pavement.<\/p>\n
puddles split-fork and hoop the shifting stripes
\naround their inky, unforgiving voidholes as you walk.
\nthe water is shallow but powerful.<\/p>\n
the air is stuffy in my lungs
\nbut it is expansive in the humid nighttime dark
\nthat extends around me.<\/p>\n
i stand on my sore feet and imagine the other places i could be.
\nmy mind circles back to the place where i can’t be.<\/p>\n
i see ducks in the parking lot
\nit is a shopping center parking lot.<\/p>\n
two groceries and a pharmacy and a paper store.
\na liquor store, a few restaurants.
\nsome other something like a craft store.<\/p>\n
i stand toe-to-edge with a puddle;
\nthe ducks waddle just up to my feet.<\/p>\n
unbothered by the snicking-cachicking of my cell phone camera.
